DAVE Snell’s hopes of claiming a unique men’s senior singles double are still alive.

The current English men’s outdoor O55s singles champion could become the first male Westlecot player since the indoor club opened in 1983 to win a men’s national indoor title.

The Wootton Bassett residentl won the Area 10 national mens O60s singles final last Saturday, beating Jack Dempsey (MidGlos) 21-13 in the area final.

Snell was always in control, making a quick start on opponent Dempsey’s green at Brockworth with two threes, and led 10-4 after eight ends, 14-5 at 12 and 19-11 at 18 before sealing a comfortable 21-13 success.

This victory sees Snell progress into the inter-area final against Area 15 winner Richard Kozlowski (West Berks, Newbury) on or before March 1 - just one step away from the latter stages and last 16 at Nottingham on March 27-28.

It also keeps alive his dream of notching a senior men’s singles double.

Meanwhile, the Westlecot quartet of Kevin Embling, Chris Cheesley, Ian Jefferies and Neil Smith beat Nathan Kitchen’s four 24-14 on their Brockworth rink to clinch the Area 10 fours championship title.

They progress to the inter-area final and will play the Area 15 winners - either Bletchley or Desborough (Maidenhead) - on a neutral green on or before March 8, which is just one step away from the final stages and last 16 in Melton & District on April 6-7.

Smith’s rink were always ahead against Kitchen, leading 12-10 at halfway and 16-12 at 15 before sealing a 24-14 victory.

Anderson father and son duo - John and his son Kyle - are through to the Area 10 final in the Generation pairs and have to play Mark Atkins and his son Ryan from Malvern Hills in the final.

Westlecot’s other hopes of national success this season lie with their junior players.

Lucy Smith, 19, the area 10 ladies singles champion for the second successive season, meets Area 9 champion England international Amy Stanton in the inter-area final at MidGlos this weekend - a repeat of last year’s final which Smith won 21-18.

Elsewhere, the Under 25 side have to play Swale (Sittingbourne, Kent) in the semi-finals of the David Cornwell U25s Double Rinks by March 1.
