LUCY Smith has qualified for the Ladies Singles National Championships for a second year in a row.

The 19-year-old Westlecot indoor bowler, who recently retained her Area 10 singles crown, produced an outstanding performance in the section 9-10 inter-area final at MidGlos to book her place in the last 16 at Melton Mowbray in April.

Smith, who made her England U25 debut last season against Scotland, beat Area 9 champion Amy Stanton (Welford-on-Avon), the 2012 World Indoor U25 champion, 21-15.

The Westlecot youngster made the perfect start collecting a three, a four and a single to go 8-0 up after three ends, however, Stanton came back winning two of the next three to close the gap to 11-5.

Smith stretched her lead to 17-7 winning four of the next five ends before England international Stanton fought back to cut the gap to 17-15.

However, Smith kept her composure winning the next three ends to record a brilliant 21-15 success.

Smith will now face Area 5 winner Penny Strong (Lincoln & District), an England skip, on Friday April 10.

Westlecot are still running in four other national championship events - men’s fours, men’s Over 60s singles, Mixed U25s double rinks and Generation Pairs.

Dave Snell won the men’s Area 10 Over 60s singles a fortnight ago and has reached the inter-area final and will face Area 15 winner Richard Kozlowski (West Berks, Newbury) on Sunday March 1 (10am) at Oxford City and County IBC - just one step away from the latter stages and last 16 at Nottingham.

It also keeps alive his dream of notching a senior men’s singles double as he won the outdoor title last August at Royal Leamington Spa.

The Westlecot rink of Kevin Embling, Chris Cheesley, Ian Jefferies and Neil Smith beat MidGlos 24-14 to win the Area 10 fours championship.

They progress to the inter-area final and will face the Desborough quartet of Michael Knight, Andy Knapper, Alan Price and John McGuinness – the Area 15 winners - at Oxford City and County on Thursday.

Father and son duo John and Kyle Anderson are through to the Area 10 final in the Generation Pairs and will face Malvern Hills pair Mark and Ryan Atkins in Worcestershire on Thursday.

Westlecot’s hopes of a second national team title lie with their junior players in the David Cornwell U25 Mixed Double Rinks.

The same two rinks of Craig Hatherall, Jake Webster, Gary Jackson and Mike Titcombe Jr, as well as, Lucy Smith, Craig Morphet, Katy Smith and Kyle Anderson have battled their way through to the semi-finals and they have beaten along the way Bristol, MidGlos, Oxford City & County and Moonfleet (Weymouth).

They now have to face Swale (Sittingbourne, Kent) in the semi-finals of the U25s Double Rinks at Sutton IBC (Surrey) on March 1.
