QUARTETS from Wootton Bassett and Swindon missed out on reaching the final in the Wiltshire Women’s national fours championship last weekend at Bassett.

The home rink of Carol Pugh, Charlotte Daniell, Lucy Smith & Charlie Godwin were beaten in a tight fours championship semi-final on the last end by Chippenham Town 21-19.

In the other semi-final, the Swindon foursome of Julie Watson, Frances Elliott, Anne Wilson and skip Alison White lost 24-9 to Alderbury, previous winners of the fours title, despite leading at halfway.

From an initial entry of 39 teams, eight fours had battled their way through to Bassett.

In the bottom half of the draw, Godwin’s Bassett rink had thumped Winsley, skipped by Sandra Bartlett, 26-11 in the quarter finals.

Barbara Land’s Chippenham Town quartet won beat Devizes, skipped by Sue Ochyra, 18-13.

In the top half, White’s Swindon four came from 9-7 behind at ten ends to edge past Salisbury 19-15.

Meanwhile Alderbury were always in control against another rink from Chippenham Town led by Rosemary Fitzpatrick, winning 20-12.

Both semi-finals were tight contests to halfway but whereas Bassett continued to trade blows, Swindon fell away to Alderbury.

In a tight and tense match, Godwin’s Bassett were 15-14 and 18-17 up at ends 15 and 18 respectively, but lost a last-end decider.

Swindon only scored two shots in the last 12 ends to lose 24-9.

Chippenham Town and Alderbury moved on to county national fours final at Devizes on July 25 and will represent Wiltshire in the national fours championships at Leamington at the start of August.

The ladies county triples started with round one last night.
