SEVEN local clubs will be bidding for glory at the Bowls Wiltshire finals staged today and tomorrow at Devizes.

In today’s men’s national championship events, Dave Godwin (Wootton Bassett) faces five-time winner Mel Biggs, from Westlecot, in the singles final, while the junior singles features another Bassett v Westlecot affair as Kyle Anderson meets Craig Hatherall.

The two-wood singles sees Westlecot team-mates Graham Hatherall - the current title-holder - and Mike Jackson clash, while in the triples final, Bassett’s James Nobbs, Chris Cheesley and skip Gary Morphet face reigning champions Holt, made up of Wayne Simmonds, Wayne Snook and Ben Gadd.

Also today, Highworth’s Shaun Hicks plays Bassett’s Lawrence Smith in the men’s unbadged singles final, while Wroughton’s Brian Coles, Babs Salter and Brian Whittingham face Pewsey Vale in the Bowls Wiltshire final of the Officers triples.

Meanwhile, several ladies and mixed competitions will be settled today.

The Stratton Churchway trio of Lil Dalrymple, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis meet Amesbury in the benevolent triples, Purton’s Alison Fail and Paul Boyles face Winsley in the BW secretary and treasurer’s pairs, while Wroughton’s Margaret Dowthwaite is through to the last four in the ladies unbadged singles.

Tomorrow sees the conclusion of the domestic competitions and four team competitions as Rodbourne Cheney’s Steve Cornish plays John Ellis (Amesbury) in the greenkeepers singles final, while on the team front, Wootton Bassett come up against Salisbury in the Tourist Trophy double rinks final.

The busy weekend programme of finals are concluded on Sunday afternoon, with Westlecot facing Holt in the final of the men’s Four Rink League and Box ladies defending their Top Ten title against North Wilts.

n KATY Smith is poised to make her England international debut this weekend.

The teenager from Peatmoor, who plays for Wootton Bassett, has been named by Bowls England in a 12-strong squad to participate in its first U18 Test series against Wales on her home club green today and tomorrow.

The series consists of male and female pairs, triples and four wood singles matches across two days, as well as two fours games and two mixed pairs and triples matches.
