SWINDON’S two indoor clubs, Westlecot and Swindon Manor, clashed in the opening round of the women’s Yetton Trophy, national inter-club championship,last weekend.

Despite the rink honours being shared, Old Town club Westlecot triumphed by 14 shots (92-78).

Wendy Anderson’s rink at Westlecot enjoyed a big win, as did Janet Willis’ foursome at Rodbourne Cheney.

Manor’s Maureen Marsh had a 32-17 victory at Westlecot and Doris Woodley’s rink secured a 25-17 victory.

Westlecot move forward to a round two tie against Cotswold (Stroud) next Saturday (November 7), while Manor enter the consolation Yetton Plate competition and have a first-round bye.

Home - Rink 1: Margaret Dowthwaite, Linda Farragher, Jenny Vowles & Rosemary Nichols lost to Ginny Nash, Deanna Gingell, Sue Gravell & Maureen March 17-32.

Rink 2: Julia Hunt, Sheila Kenny, Jill Webb & Wendy Anderson beat Wendy Young, Sue Stratford, Alison White & Gloria Edwards 29-10.

Away - Rink 4: Patricia Murray, Viv Barker, Sue Reeve & Janet Willis beat Jean Bird, Ann Wilson, Barbara Twine & Eileen Oliver 29-11.

Rink 3: Judy Hallard, Isabel Jenner, Kay Webb & Linda Perfitt lost to Paula Hughes, Susan Griffiths, Maureen Rogers & Doris Woodley 17-25.

NATIONAL team competitions in men’s and mixed events begin in earnest over the next two weekends for Westlecot.

Today, the men face MidGlos (Brockworth) in the first round of the Denny Cup, national inter-club championship.

Tomorrow Westlecot face North Wilts (10am) in the first round of the Top Club competition, which features five disciplines - men’s and ladies two wood singles, mixed pairs, mixed triples and mixed fours (rinks).

Next Sunday (November 8) Westlecot compete in the Egham Trophy, national mixed inter-club championship against Leominster & District in the second round (10am).

In the Area 10 section of the ladies champion of champions, Westlecot’s Katy Smith beat Carterton’s Diana Wright 21-19 in the quarter-finals and now meets Pauline Tuckey (Fairford) in the semi-finals by November 8.

Katy’s father, Neil came from behind to beat Ken Sawyer (Fairford) 21-13 in the men’s last eight and now faces an Area 10 semi-final against Carterton’s Bob Turley by November 8.
