KATY Smith and her father Neil, from the Westlecot indoor club, both bid to reach the final stages of the ladies and men’s National Champion of Champions competition in the space of three days.

They will both be competing in the inter-area finals (last 32) and are just one step away from booking a place in the last 16 at Warner Lakeside, Hayling Island, at the end of next month.

Katy, 18, won the Area 10 section of the ladies champion of champions with a 21-7 victory in the final over Jean Kemsley (Gloucester).

She now faces Area 9 winner, England international Amy Stanton (Welford-on-Avon, Warks), today in the inter-area final on the neutral green at MidGlos (Brockworth, Gloucester), looking to reach the final stages in this competition for the first time.

Dad Neil, 49, runner-up in the 2007 men’s champion of champions final to current world number one Nicky Brett (City of Ely) and a last 16 qualifier on several occasions in recent years, is the Area 10 champion.

He won the area champion of champions title a fortnight ago in a match he never trailed, beating England junior international and 2014 national champion Ryan Atkins (Malvern Hills) at home at Westlecot in the area final 21-17.

Smith now faces Area 15 champion Simon Jones (Desborough, Maidenhead) in the inter-area final on the neutral green at Oxford on Monday evening.
