WESTLECOT will be seeking to reclaim top spot from Carterton in the east region table of the Wessex League when they play Reading Leisure Centre side Rivermead tomorrow.

Oxfordshire outfit Carterton took full advantage of Westlecot’s inactivity to move above them last Sunday when they beat Chipping Norton 85-72 and picked-up 14 of the 16 points on offer.

It was one of four matches played in the east section last weekend, which included Swindon Manor against West Berks, while Westlecot and Rivermead did not play.

The Old Town indoor club and Berkshire side Rivermead rectify the fixture list when they meet tomorrow morning (10am), in the only game being played in the east region this weekend.

Currently, Westlecot trail Carterton by nine points in the table, the latter having played one more match.

The eastern section is fast becoming a two-horse race at the top of the table, with both sides looking odds on favourites to claim the top two spots and automatic qualification for the end of season play-offs and a place in the battle for the overall Wessex League title.

Westlecot are only missing one of their regular players for the match against bottom-of-the-table Rivermead tomorrow.

That is Neil Smith, who is competing this weekend on the Open Singles Circuit in the Welford-on-Avon (Warks) open singles tournament.

  • SWINDON Manor suffered a 93-61 defeat in their clash with West Berks.

However, they did have some joy, with the revamped rink, skipped by Shaun Hicks, winning their game at home in Rodbourne Cheney by 10 shots to collect a very useful two points in the process.

The other home rink, skipped by Kevin Mitchell, lost by six shots, so Manor only took the home honours 41-37. But Manor struggled on the away rinks in Newbury and lost both of them easily.

However, those two points at home from Hicks' rink enabled his team to move up one place to eighth.
