THE Westlecot trio of Josie Lloyd, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis are through to the final stages in the ladies national Over 50s two wood triples competition.

They booked their place in the last 16 at Nottingham with an 18-15 win over Worcestershire side Bromsgrove, the Area 9 winners, in the inter-area final in Gloucester.

Lloyd, Anderson and skip Willis, the Area 10 over 50s two wood champions, had to battle hard to overcome the Bromsgrove trio of Gill Cliff, Angela Farrar and Chris Grigg.

They led 4-3 at five ends after a tight opening, however they had slipped behind at 10 to trail 12-6 and were 15-12 down after 15 ends.

But a strong finish saw them claim an 18-15 success and a place in the national finals at the end of March.

They won seven of the last eight ends, scoring 12 shots and only conceding three on end 12, to turn the match around completely.

Willis’ trio are also through to the inter-area final in the ladies national triples championship after a 16-10 area final win over Malvern Hills.

They will now face Yvonne Pick’s triples team from Welford-on-Avon in the inter-area final, possibly on February 20 at Cotswold (Stroud).

Anderson and Willis were also victorious in the Area 10 ladies over 60s pairs final with a 19-18 extra end win over Sue Hambidge and Pauline Gunn (MidGlos).

They will now play Area 9 winners Cliff and Chris Grigg (Bromsgrove) in the inter-area final at Cotswold (Stroud) on Wednesday.

Katy Smith won the Area 10 final in the ladies singles championship last Saturday with a hard fought 21-19 win over Gill Fry (MidGlos) to progress to the inter-area final versus Amy Stanton (Welford).

Katy, with her elder sister Lucy, won their the Area 10 ladies national pairs championship final 22-15 against MidGlos duo Sue Hambidge and Pauline Gunn.

They will now meet the Area 9 winners (Welford or Bromsgrove) in the inter-area final.

  • SWINDON Manor recorded their second win this season in the east section of the Wessex League with a comfortable 85-64 victory over Oxfordshire side Chipping Norton.

The Rodbourne Cheney-based club have made great strides in this campaign after taking the wooden spoon last year in their first season in the Wessex League and failing to win any of their nine east group games.

They won on two of the four rinks against Chipping Norton and drew on another last Sunday to collect 13 of the 16 points on offer.

Three of the games were extremely tight, with Kevin Mitchell’s rink winning by one shot and Richard Young’s foursome losing by a single shot while Ian Thomas’s quartet drew 18-18.

However, the match-winning difference and decisive result came from Carl Fernandes' home rink, who thrashed their opponents 34-13.

Manor stay eighth in the table and play Oxford & District.

Westlecot are also playing tomorrow (Sunday) when they meet the other Oxford team based in the city centre - City and County.

The Old Town indoor club lead the east region table by five points from Carterton and eight from West Berks (Newbury).

However, with a match in hand, Westlecot have the ideal opportunity against City and County to extend their advantage at the head of east regional affairs and move a step closer to an automatic place in the end of season play-offs by finishing in the top two.
