KATY Smith missed out in her bid to win the national Under-25 singles championship title at White Oak IBC Swanley in Kent last weekend.

The 19-year-old indoor member at Westlecot reached the last four of the competition before bowing out to the eventual winner, England international Katherine Rednall.

Katy and her elder sister Lucy, 20, were two of the four qualifiers for White Oak from the west region finals held at Bristol, alongside Torquay United duo Sophie Tolchard and Cassidy Lenton.

They were joined in Swanley by the four regional qualifiers from the north, south and east regions.

The 16-strong field assembled for the championship consisted of players from only ten clubs and included nine players who will represent England in the women’s U25 British Isles IBC this weekend in Scotland at Paisley.

Unfortunately, the Smith sisters were drawn against each other in the last 16, with Katy beating Lucy 8-4, 9-7.

In the quarter-finals, Katy faced Devon Cooper (Riverain, Hitchin, Herts) and won 8-6, 8-9 2-1 in a tie-breaker to advance to the semi-finals.

But her fine run was ended there by Ipswich player Katherine Rednall, an England senior and junior international, 6-4, 10-2.

Rednall then went on to win the final on a tie-breaker from fellow international Sophie Tolchard (Torquay United).

Meanwhile, as one door closed for the Smith sisters, another opened as they won the ladies Area 10 pairs championship final after beating MidGlos duo Sue Hambidge and Pauline Gunn 22-15.

They now move forward to the inter-area pairs final at Cotswold (Stroud) on February 20 where they will face the Area 9 winners, the Bromsgrove pairing of Gill Cliff and Angela Farrar, and are just one step away from the last 16 at Melton & District in April.

The Westlecot trio of Josie Lloyd, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis have already reached the final stages in the ladies national Over-50s two-wood triples at Nottingham from March 28-29 and are now bidding to reach another final.

The combination of Lloyd, Anderson and Willis are still running in the ladies triples championship after winning the Area 10 triples final with a 16-10 victory over Malvern Hills.

They have now qualified for the inter-area final against Area 9 winners Welford-on-Avon, led by Yvonne Pick. The match has to be played by February 21 on a neutral green - just one step away from reaching Melton & District and the last 16.

A Westlecot team of Lucy, Katy and Neil Smith, plus Ian Jefferies, have qualified for the latter stages of the mixed fours championship at Lincoln and District at the end of the month.

While in the men’s championship events and competitions, players from the Swindon Old Town club still have an interest in three disciplines.

Terry Walton, Dave Snell and Mel Biggs are through to the last 16 at Nottingham from March 28-29 in the Over-50s triples after beating Desborough (Maidenhead) 19-12 in the inter-area final.

Two of these players, Snell and Biggs, plus Dave Godwin, have reached the Area 10 final in the men’s triples championship and have to play Mike Holmes and two of his colleagues from Malvern Hills.

While, Neil Smith has booked a clash with Malvern Hills’ Ryan Atkins in the Area 10 men’s singles final after a 21-3 semi-final win over Westlecot colleague Tom Pittuck.
