WESTLECOT have won the east region of the Wessex League with one group game still to play next weekend.

They moved into an unassailable position at the top of the table with a comprehensive 34-shots victory over Oxford & District last Sunday in their penultimate group match of the season.

It maintained their unbeaten record during their 2015-16 campaign and took their number of victories to eight in a row.

However, Manor just missed out on making it a double for Swindon clubs.

Despite winning on three of the four rinks, the Rodbourne Cheney-based club lost 87-78 overall to Reading Leisure Centre side Rivermead after losing heavily in one of two matches played in Reading.

Westlecot were in total control of their match against Oxford & District, leading from the outset. They were 18-9 up overall after five ends and 34-24 ahead at 10.

They gradually pulled away to a 92-59 success but failed to score a 16-points maximum by winning on all four rinks for the second match in a row against Oxford clubs.

On this occasion, the home rink skipped by Mike Titcombe trailed for long periods of their game and went down 20-14.

However, Westlecot still picked up 14 points, which took them their total to 114, which is 19 clear of second-placed Carteton who they meet next weekend with only 16 points on offer.

Westlecot are guaranteed top spot and one of two automatic places from the east section into the end of season play-offs for the overall Wessex League title, but the other is still up for grabs.

It will go down to the wire and is a fight between Carterton, Newbury side West Berks and Loddon Vale (Basingstoke), with only five points separating all three teams.

One poor rink score denied Swindon Manor their third win of the season and the chance to move above Chipping Norton in the east table.

They won on three rinks against Rivermead - two last-gasp one-shot wins and a 12-shots success from Ian Thomas’ foursome at home.

However, the 32-9 defeat suffered away by Kevin Mitchell’s four proved extremely costly in the final analysis.

Manor round off their second season in the men’s Wessex League with a visit to play-off chasing Loddon Vale in Basingstoke.
