TWO TRIPLES and a foursome from Westlecot have won their inter-area finals and qualified for the last 16 and final stages of their event at the national indoor championship and competitions.

The quartet of Ian Jefferies, Neil Smith and sisters Lucy and Katy Smith begin their bid for glory in the mixed fours national championship at Lincoln & District on Friday when they face Area 29/30 winners Chenda Harris, Lynn Williams, Tony Foxwell and Brian Southward, from Taunton Deane, in the last 16.

If successful, they would then face Ipswich or Huntingdon in the quarter-finals on the same day.

The semis and final are scheduled for the following day at 10am and 3pm respectively.

The two triples who have both reached the national finals in Nottingham next month are the ladies Over 50 two-wood triples team of Josie Lloyd, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis, and the men’s Over 50s triples team of Terry Walton, Dave Snell and Mel Biggs.

Hoping to join these three nationals qualifiers are three more Westlecot combinations who have inter-area finals and the chance to play to reach Melton & District in April.

The Lloyd, Anderson and Willis trio, the Area 10 champions, contest the ladies national triples championship inter-area final in Stroud at 10am today against a Welford-on-Avon triple that includes Yvonne Pick and England international Amy Stanton.

Also in Stroud, the Smith sisters, Lucy and Katy, compete in the inter-area final of the ladies pairs against Bromsgrove duo Gill Cliff and Angela Farrer, bidding for a place at Melton & District.

Meanwhile, the trio of Dave Godwin, Snell and Biggs had to come from behind to win the Area 10 men’s triples championship final 19-18 against Malvern Hills to book a place in the inter-area final of this championship event, just one step away from Melton.

Biggs and co dropped a five on the fifth end to trail Malvern Hills’ Andy Holmes, Alan Griffiths and Mike Holmes 7-4 but were tied 10-10 at halfway.

They edged in front 12-10 after 11 ends but at 15 trailed 18-12 and were staring defeat in the face with only three ends remaining.

However, they turned the match around with a single and two threes for a last gasp 19-18 success and progressed to the inter-area final against Area 15 winners Whiteknights or Bletchley.

Westlecot’s Neil Smith also goes in the Area 10 men’s singles final on Wednesday against Malvern Hills’ England junior international Ryan Atkins (Malvern Hills) at MidGlos.

WANBOROUGH are going on a tour to Paignton from September 5-9, where players will be guaranteed three games.
