TWO COMBINATIONS from the Westlecot indoor club begin their bid for glory on Monday at Nottingham IBC in the fourth and penultimate block of the national indoor championships.

The trio of Josie Lloyd, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis are through to the last 16 in the ladies Over 50 two wood triples competition while Terry Walton, Dave Snell and Mel Biggs have qualified for the last 16 in the men’s over 50 triples.

First-up on Easter Monday at 9.30am are the Janet Willis combination, the Area 10 champions, in the O50s two wood triples who booked their place at Nottingham when coming from 15-8 down after 12 ends to win the last six and beat Bromsgrove 18-15 in the inter-area final.

Lloyd, Anderson and Willis have been drawn in the last 16 against very familiar opponents - the North Wilts (Chippenham) triple of Jean Collier, Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs.

The six players have all played together both indoors and outdoors while representing Wiltshire in national inter-county knock-out competitions such as Liberty Trophy and Johns Trophy as well as South West Counties League matches.

Westlecot’s Anderson has reached the final twice before in the women’s over 50s two wood triples.

Together with Jean Bird and Joyce Laming when skipping Anderson was beaten in the 2002 final by Rushden Town (Northants) but the same trio made amends three years later lifting the national title in 2005 when defeating Colchester (Essex).

The winner of the all-Wiltshire ladies clash between Westlecot and North Wilts will progress to the quarter-finals on Monday evening (6pm) where they will face either Boston (Lincs) or Arun (Bognor Regis, W Sussex).

The semi-finals and final are scheduled for the following day, Tuesday, at 9.30am and 5.45pm respectively.

Westlecot men’s combination of Walton, Snell and Biggs begin their quest for a national title when they take to the green on Easter Monday at 1.30pm against the Blackpool Newton Hall triple of Steve Airey, Eric Wallace and Eric Rawcliffe.

To reach Nottingham the Westlecot trio won a tight Area 10 final 17-15 versus Malvern Hills and followed it up with a 19-12 victory over Area 15 champions Desborough (Maidenhead) in the inter-area final.

After dropping a three on the first end they score a five on the next and were never headed again by the Berkshire side to book their spot in the last stages of the national finals.

If successful in their last 16 match against Blackpool Newton Hall, Westlecot would move forward to the quarter-finals on Monday evening (6pm) and face either Isle of Wight or Folkstone (Kent) previous winners three times in recent years of this event in 2010, 2013 and 2014.

The semi-finals and final are scheduled for the following day, Tuesday, March 29 at 9.30am and 5.45pm respectively.
