THE ANNUAL Westlecot indoor club championship finals staged at the Old Town club last weekend saw only three players win more than one event, with nobody retaining a title.

The most successful players were Josie Lloyd and Wendy Anderson, who together won both the ladies pairs championship and Over 60 pairs titles.

Meanwhile, the other double was also recorded in by Geoff Smith, who won the men’s pairs competition alongside Gerry Charman and Over 60s pairs with Martin Salter.

However, Lloyd missed out on a third title when losing in the ladies singles final to 20-year-old Lucy Smith, despite leading for more than half of the match.

At five ends, Lloyd led 5-2 and 10-2 at eight but Smith came back with a run of 1-4-2-4 to lead for the first time, 13-10 at 12.

Lloyd then reeled off four ends in a row to move ahead again, leading 16-13 at 15, but then saw Smith go on another run of 2-1-4-1 to win the match 21-16 and claim the singles title that her younger sister Katy, 19, had won the previous two seasons.

However, their father, Neil Smith, failed to lift the men’s singles title for the fifth year in a row, going out in a hard-fought semi-final to Steve Remington 21-18.

Remington then missed out in the final, being beaten by 20-year-old Mike Titcombe Jr, who is enjoying an incredible rich vein of form at present.

Titcombe led Remington 4-3 at five ends but trailed him 9-6 at nine. However, in the next 11 he only conceded singles on ends 12 and 13 while scoring seven singles himself to lead 13-11 at 18 ends before he finished in style with a brace of full-house fours for a 21-11 victory after 20 ends.

Those two victories for Lucy Smith and Titcombe have earned them the right to represent Westlecot in the respective new Area 14 national champion of champions competitions next season.

Although Titcombe won the men’s singles, he failed to retain his U25 singles crown, going out in the quarter-finals 2-1 to Craig Morphet on a tie-breaker.

Morphet went on to win the U25 singles title, defeating Craig Hatherall in the final 2-0. He won the first set of nine ends 8-6 and the second 9-5.

Although they missed out on the singles titles this season, Neil and Katy Smith still won an event in the championships, combining to take the mixed pairs crown when defeating Charlotte and Dave Godwin 22-11.

The Godwins bounced back alongside John Anderson to win the mixed triples, beating holders Denis Holborow, Jeff and Rosemary Nichols in the final 15-11.

Ten of the Westlecot finals were played last weekend but one - the men’s triples final - still remains to be resolved.

It is expected to be played tomorrow when Godwin could collect a second title to go with his mixed triples success.
