THREE players from the Royal Wootton Bassett Bowls Club have been selected by Bowls England for junior international trials, WRITES DAVE EATON.

The Smith sister s– Lucy, 20 and Katy 19 – and 23-year-old Kyle Anderson, who is a former Wanborough and Westlecot player, have all been invited for trials.

Anderson, a Wanborough resident, first started bowling at his local club at the age of eight and then moved to Westlecot in 2004, where he is still a member of the indoor side.

After winning the Old Town club’s outdoor title in 2012, Anderson moved to Bassett and having appeared regularly at lead for Wiltshire men in the inter-county championship for the past four seasons, he has been chosen to attend the England men’s U25 trial in Leamington Spa next month.

The Smith girls, from Peatmoor, West Swindon, are already junior international players and have been selected for the ladies U25 trial.

Lucy’s first international call-up came in 2014 when she successfully came-off the subs bench to play and win against Scotland in the Indoor U25 Home International Series at Nottingham.

Katy made her international bow outdoors on her own green at Bassett last September in the first ever two-day U18 mixed international against Wales, competing in the ladies pairs, mixed pairs and ladies singles.

Last year, Katy also attended trials and special training sessions and was named on the shortlist to represent England at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.

n THE fifth and final block of the national indoor championships at Melton and District this week failed to produce any joy for Wiltshire bowlers competing in the ladies national triples championship.

The Westlecot trio of Josie Lloyd, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis bowed out in the last 16, going down 26-10 to the Spalding three of Rebecca Simpson, Chelsea Tomlin and Annie Dunham.

  • DESPITE the start of the outdoor season this weekend, there still some important indoor games taking place.

The Smiths – father Neil and his two daughters Lucy and Katy – plus Steve Remington will be representing Westlecot as they compete at Dolphin (Poole) in the two-day World Bowls Tour qualifiers for a place in the 2016-17 International and Scottish Opens.
