ROYAL Wootton Bassett Bowls Club are to host a special game against Disability Bowls England at their green at Tanners Close tomorrow (2.30pm).

The match will be a five triples affair over the full 18 ends, with the visiting team compromising mostly partially sighted bowlers drawn from players from all parts of the country, including London and the Home Counties, Weston-super-Mare and the West Country, the Midlands and Yorkshire.

Making her debut for the Disability Bowls England side will be Bassett member Jeannette Maisey, who has been involved in the organisation of the special game.

“It will be my first time of playing for them and hopefully the first of many games for Disability Bowls England,” said Maisey. “I will just have to see how it goes.

“The team they are bringing has players from all over the country, so it is a good representative side.”

Bassett club chairman Ian Tanner said: “It will be the first time we have held a disability game at this level but not the first.

“They are all able bodied, with the majority of them suffering from a visual problem so they will put strings down at the sides of each rink to help them.

“Going back a few years, we previously used to have a fixture each year against a disability team drawn from the Cheltenham and district area.”

Spectators are welcome to attend the special game this weekend, with refreshments and a bar available throughout the afternoon.
