TEAMS from Wanborough, Supermarine and Purton are competing in Amesbury today as they continue their bids to reach August’s national championships in Royal Leamington Spa.

The Wiltshire women’s county championship started last week, where the opening two rounds in the county fours event were played, while the third round was held on Monday.

The Wanborough quartet of Jackie Stokes, Linda Boardman, Jean Crepaz and Deanne Davis saw off holders Chippenham Town and Wroughton to reach the quarter-finals.

They will be joined there by 2013 runners-up Purton, made up of Chris Mitchell, Sue Crouch, Julie Jones and Alison Fail.

Supermarine will be represented by the foursome of Carol Sandry, Marilyn Kilburn, Pat Jones and Bev Millin, who bested Swindon and Highworth after receiving a first-round bye.

After the quarter-finals and semi-finals, the two teams who go on to contest the county final on July 30 will also represent Wiltshire at Leamington in August.

WILTSHIRE Ladies, led by county president Pat Jones (Supermarine), made a winning start in their first county women’s friendly of the 2016 season away in Wales against West Glamorgan.

However, on Tuesday, the county lost their opening game of the South West Counties League campaign in defence of their title against Cornwall, despite winning on four of the six rinks.

In a close game in Wales, Wiltshire were three shots down with only two rinks left out on the green at Brynhyfryd.

But Lesley Trattles’ rink scored a two on the last end to cut the gap to only one shot.

Then, Wroughton’s Babs Salter, with her last wood, moved the jack to grab two shots and give Wiltshire a 109-108 victory.

The county ladies’ next scheduled friendly is at Supermarine against Warwickshire on Thursday.

However, against Cornwall, their competitive league campaign got off to a disappointing start as they were beaten 117-111.
