ROYAL Wootton Bassett and Westlecot men both triumphed in their opening 2016 Wiltshire Four Rink League play-offs quarter-finals.

The top two teams in Area B by some distance were far too strong for fellow Swindon clubs Highworth and West End in their last-eight ties.

Bassett were in dominant mood winning on all four rinks - two home and two away - thumping Area A runners-up West End by 63 shots in a 105-42 success.

Westlecot, runners-up in Area B, were equally impressive against Highworth, the Area A winners, beating them by 36 shots as they ran-out 89-53 victors after winning on three of the four rinks.

In the play-off semi-finals they will meet either holders Holt, the runaway Area C winners or Area D runners-up Salisbury, who do not play the last of the quarter-finals until August 26.

Meanwhile, Basset’s men’s team qualified for the last eight of the Top Club, to be played at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.

In the Dorset and Wilts section, Bassett beat Westlecot A 4-1 and Chippenham Town 5-0.

They then beat Westlecot B, 3-2, and Holt, 3-2, to become Wiltshire champions and clinched the Dorset and Wilts sectional title with a 3-2 success over Greenhill (Weymouth).

Wiltshire enjoyed success in the two Sutton Winson mixed U18s events last weekend.

Fourteen-year-old Jamie Shadwell reached the quarter-finals before losing 3-1 to beaten finalist Nicole Rogers (Hampshire).

Georgina Newman (Avon) shone in the Sutton Winson Plate - a pairs competition played with two woods each over two seven ends sets - as she reached the final.
