PURTON ladies were unable to halt Box’s continued dominance of the Top Club competition as the west Wiltshire side recorded a comfortable 3-1 victory over them at the Bowls Wiltshire finals on Sunday afternoon.

Box have a superb record in the Top Club in the present decade and with this year’s success at Devizes, recorded their seventh straight victory, a run which started as far back as 2010.

They were not troubled in the final by Purton, taking the honours in three of the four disciplines, winning the pairs, triples and fours but losing the four-wood singles.

In the other team event, the mixed double rinks, Wilton beat Avon 38-33.

Elsewhere at the county finals, Westlecot also completed a double.

Mike Titcombe won the men’s unbadged singles and Gary Jackson, the greenkeepers competition.

Meanwhile, single victories were recorded by Swindon’s Geoff Porte, who became men’s champion of champions, Wroughton’s Margaret Dowthwaite in the unbadged singles, and Swindon West End duo Alan Norgrove and Alan Adams in the BW mixed secretary and treasurers pairs.

Locals also featured in two other finals, with Stratton Churchway being edged out in the ladies benevolent triples final by a shot.

However, it was a case of a bad weekend at the office for Town Gardens player Tom Pittuck, who collected a losing finalists hat-trick.

Only four events at Devizes did not have a Swindon area player in the final – the mixed double rinks, ladies champion of champions (Alex Jacobs beat Irene Button 22-11), men’s over 60s triples (Avon beat Holt 28-11) and BW officers mixed triples (Pewsey beat Winsley 24-7).

First in the winners’ enclosure on Saturday morning was Swindon’s Porte, who made a slow start before coming back from 17-10 at 19 ends to finally beat Pittuck 21-14.

Norgrove and Adams (Swindon West End) also had to come from behind to beat Devizes in the BW secretary and treasurers pairs, winning 21-18, while Dowthwaite (Wroughton) beat Ronnie Mussell (Salisbury) 17-6 in the ladies unbadged two wood singles final.

Westlecot’s double came from Gary Jackson in the greenkeepers singles with a comfortable 21-12 win over Devizes’ Colin Little, and Mike Titcombe’s 21-12 victory over Pittuck in the men’s unbadged singles.

Pittuck’s woe was completed when he skipped a losing rink for Town Gardens on Sunday morning against Bassett in the Tourist Trophy final.

Stratton Churchway’s June Webb, Sue Stratford and Daphne Collier were edged out 16-15 by Salisbury in the benevolent triples final.
