SWINDON’S two indoor clubs endured mixed fortunes last weekend in both the ladies and men’s national and regional team championships and competition events.

Rodbourne-based Swindon Manor are competing in the ladies Yetton Trophy for the third successive year since their move from the Oasis and recorded their first victory.

They defeated local rivals Gloucestershire side Fairford by nine shots as they ran-out 65-56 victors in a second round tie following a in bye in the first round.

However, Westlecot suffered a 63-52 defeat against Oxford City and County.

Manor took the honours against Fairford on three of the four rinks, including a home double, with the foursome of Jean Bird, Maureen Rogers, Barbara Twine and skip Doris Woodley recording the biggest winning success of 18 shots in Rodbourne.

Despite winning on two of the four rinks and drawing on another Westlecot went down by 11 shots in their trophy tie.

Westlecot were tied 17-17 across the board after five ends but down 37-30 at ten and 52-44 at 15 before finally losing 63-52.

The Old Town club’s two rink successes were only by slender one shot margins not enough to wipe out the 22-9 away rink loss.

In the third round next weekend, Manor will face Westlecot’s conquerors Oxford City and County.

Westlecot, meanwhile, go into the consolation Yetton Plate competition and will play Fairford next Saturday.

The men’s side at Westlecot also suffered defeat. They went down 65-60 to MidGlos in the Denny Cup.

They fully never recovered from a very slow start as they trailed overall 29-7 after five ends and 45-19 at halfway (nine ends).

They fought back cutting the gap to 59-43 after 15 ends and to only 65-60 after the statutory 18 ends perhaps the previous limit of 21 ends for fours games would have been to their benefit and their saviour.
