WESTLECOT enjoyed a winning double this past week in two national team competitions.

They recorded a hard-fought 64-62 win last Sunday over Reading-based Whiteknights in the Egham Trophy.

Then, two days later, the senior men produced a stirring fightback to come from ten shots adrift at halfway to beat MidGlos 43-32 at 18 ends in the men’s Over 60 inter-club double rink.

Westlecot only took the honours on one of the four rinks in the Egham match against Whiteknights, drew on another and lost the other two.

The home foursome of Kevin Embling, Kay Webb, Wendy Anderson and Neil Smith were the Old Town club's heroes, winning 20-10, with Smith clinching an overall two-shot victory on the last end.

On the other home rink, Steve Remington was tied 12-12 at 15 ends but was finally edged out 17-14.

Away, the Kyle Anderson rink was 13-7 down at ten ends but fought back superbly to tie their match 19-19, while despite trailing throughout, Mike Titcombe’s rink kept their final deficit to five shots.

Westlecot's over 60s produced a brilliant second-half performance to snatch victory away at MidGlos to win their second-round national O60s double rinks tie.

They had fallen 26-15 adrift at nine ends and the writing appeared to be on the wall.

However, the away foursome of Denis Holborow, Dave Matthews, John Thomas and Terry Walton, who were 8-1 down at five ends and 17-4 at 10, staged a fantastic recover. They reeled in the shots to draw level at 19-19 on end 17 and pick-up a two on the last end for a 21-19 win.

At Westlecot, Hedley Bowen’s quartet made a flying start and led 11-0 after six ends, but were then pulled back and were only 12-10 up at 11 ends and 14-13 at 14.

But they produced a late flurry in the final four ends for a 22-13 victory.

Westlecot also have teams in the ladies' Yetton Plate and Mason Trophy, while the Under 25s are still in their national competition.

In the Mason Trophy, the Old Town club face Camberley this Friday, while in the Yeton Plate, they take on Whiteknights the following day.

In the Under 25s mixed rink event, Westlecot take on MidGlos in the new year.
