WESTLECOT men extended their unbeaten run in the Wessex League to six games as they brushed aside basement team Rivermead (Reading) to increase their lead at the top of the East Region table to 23 points.

The Old Town indoor club ran out comfortable 27-shot winners over their Berkshire opponents as they secured an 83-56 victory winning on three of the four rinks to collect 14 out of the 16 points on offer.

However, Swindon Manor did not play and have slipped down to seventh from fifth.

Swindon Moanor, however, do have at least one game in hand over teams that sit above them in the table.

Steve Remington’s rink away in Reading for Westlecot produced the biggest winning margin of 13 shots which was equalled by Neil Smith’s home rink who scored a four on the 18th and last end to win 25-12.

The other home rink, skipped by Mel Biggs, weighed in with a nine-shot success but a white wash was denied as Kyle Anderson’s rink struggled from the halfway point and eventually lost their game by eight shots.

Across the board Westlecot were 25-11 up after five ends and 40-23 at halfway (nine ends) but only 63-51 ahead at 15 before a powerful finish saw them move 83-56 clear after 18 ends.

East section leaders Westlecot’s next match is on January 29 against Oxford City and County while Swindon Manor are due to play on successive Sundays – tomorrow versus Chipping Norton and a week later on January 29 against Oxford and District (Liittlemore, Cowley).
