FORMER winners Westlecot ladies have reached the last 32 in the Mason Trophy O60s double rinks competition.

They produced a stirring final flourish to qualify for the fourth round, snatching a 40-39 victory over Rivermead (Reading).

The home rink, skipped by Janet Willis, recorded a 26-20 win, although the away rink, skipped by Rosemary Nicholls, lost 14-19.

Westlecot made a reasonable start and led 13-10 overall after five ends but trailed 26-18 after 10 and had slipped 37-30 behind after 15.

However, in the last three ends, the two rinks only conceded one shot each to ensure Westlecot claimed a last-gasp victory.

Westlecot will now face Oxford City and County in round four on February 17.

A MIXED team from Westlecot will play Wiltshire Men in an indoor friendly today.

The scheduled match should have been an all-male affair but Westlecot were unable to field 20 men for the match and rather than cancel, opted for a mixed game.

SWINDON Manor are still on course for their best season since re-joining the East Region of the men’s Wessex League in 2014.

They recorded their third win of the season in five matches when defeating Chipping Norton 75-53 to take 14 of the 16 points on offer by winning on three of the four rinks.

Their previous best was last season’s eighth-place finish, with two wins and a total of 43 points.

The win over Chippy lifted Manor to sixth spot in the table on 42 points and they still have one game in hand over most of the other nine sides.

Manor made an excellent start and led 23-11 overall after five ends and were 36-23 up at halfway.

They had increased the advantage to 60-42 at 15 before finally running out 22-shot victors.

There were wins for the rinks skipped by Richard Young (12 shots), Carl Fernandes (nine) and Paul Cooper (six), while Ian Thomas’s quartet lost by five shots.

Manor are back in action tomorrow when they play Oxford & District (Cowley).

WESTLECOT men will be looking to strengthen their position at the top of the East Region of the Wessex League when they clash with Oxford City and County tomorrow.

They are unbeaten in six matches to date, with their three nearest rivals having already lost two games each. Westlecot sit on 87 points, 22 clear of second-placed Loddon Vale.
