KATY SMITH makes her long awaited Junior England U25 indoor debut today at the Junior Home International Series being held at Iswlyn IBC, Blackwood, Gwent, South Wales.

She is named in the 16 strong England side to face Scotland and Wales.

Katy, who just turned 20 years of age, has been chosen to play at number two in a rink comprising of Spalding’s Ruby Hill (lead), Katy Smith, Ipswich & District’s Sarah Gove (three) and the rink is skipped by Hayley Robinson (York & District).

Meanwhile, sister Lucy, who Katy beat in the ladies u25 national indoor final at City of Ely two weeks ago has received a late call-up as a travelling reserve to Wales tomorrow.

She holds one England U25 cap when called into the team for the vital final match a couple of seasons ago against Scotland which England won to win the U25 International Series.

Katy plays at 3pm today against Wales and at 9.15am tomorrow morning against Scotland.

Meanwhile, Katy’s hopes of adding to her recent U25 national success have been dashed.

Beaten finalist last year in the national mixed fours final at Lincoln, Katy along with sister Lucy, dad Neil and Ian Jefferies lost their Area 14 mixed fours final on Tuesday at Oxford City & County 15-11 against Whiteknights’ Morgan Merryweather, Sally Windmill, Simon Jones and Andy Knapper.

They were 13-11 down going into the 18th and last end against Whiteknights and were holding three for game but Knapper killed the end. On the replayed last end Reading picked up a two for a 15-11 win.

And Katy tasted defeat again on Thursday night in the mixed fours area 14 final with dad Neil losing 16-15 on an extra end, despite being 9-0 up early on, to Steve Tuohy and Doreen Hankin (Egham, Surrey).
