WESTLECOT saw their title dreams in the east section of the Wessex League usurped after they lost 75-70 to Carterton in the final match of the regular season.

The Old Town club could only pick up three of the 16 points on offer against the Oxfordshire side as Loddon Vale took the crown after picking up 15 points following their 81-42 success over Swindon Manor.

The points haul against Swindon Manor saw Vale claim top spot with a four-point cushion.

Westlecot and Vale will now move into the Wessex League play-offs alongside third-placed West Berks.

Westlecot could only win on two of the four rinks played against Carterton as they lost two and drew the other.

The Old Town club found themselves 28-16 down after five ends, however, they took a 66-64 lead at the 16th with two to play.

But Carterton responded by picking up 11 shots to Westlecot’s four to take the win. John Anderson’s away rink claimed their only success.

Swindon Manor could only pick up one draw in their four rinks against Loddon Vale.

Richard Young’s quartet claimed a 13-13 draw as the rest of the Manor team, who finished in eighth place, were unable to overcome the newly-crowned east section champions.

  • WILTSHIRE’S men ended their poor run in the annual fixture against the county women by securing a 116-102 success at North Wilts IBC on Sunday.

Martin Salter, standing in for men’s president Steve Hockings, who was suffering with a serious back complaint, proved a lucky charm for the men again as he helped them register their first win in the event since the 2011-12 season - a campaign in which he was president.

Against the ladies team, led by president Fizz Mace, the men took an early lead of 11 shots after five ends, with Salter’s rink 8-0 up and Dave Williams’ rink 11-1 ahead.

At 10, the men went 16 shots clear but five ends later, the ladies had fought back to be only four shots adrift.

The men pulled away again to be 16 ahead at 18 ends and stayed clear for victory, each side winning on three rinks.
