KATY Smith is celebrating a slice of national glory after becoming the British Isles U25s singles champion in midweek.

The 20-year-old, who plays for Westlecot, reigned supreme at the British Isles Indoor Bowls Council Championship at Belfast IBC on March 13-15.

Smith, who has also featured for England at U25 level, beat Wales’ Amy Williams 21-19 and then in the semi-finals, the Swindon bowler got the better of Jersey’s Chloe Greechan – a former World Indoor Bowls Council mixed pairs champion – in a 21-11 victory.

Scotland youth international Carla Banks stood in Smith’s way in the final but she ran out a 21-17 winner to claim the national title.

WESTLECOT’S over-60s team of Kevin Embling, Dave Matthews, John Thomas and Terry Walton went down 20-12 in their area final clash with the West Berks quartet of Fred Brown, Martyn Chant, Tony Aubrey and Derek Parsonson.

However, in the Ladies over-60s Pairs, the Westlecot duo of Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis have booked their place at the National finals in Nottingham next month after beating Eileen Devonald-Batt from Desborough 23-13 in their area final.

In the Wessex League play-offs, Westlecot have reached the semi-finals after beating West Berks 62-53.

The Old Town club will now face Kingsthorpe in the last four on Sunday, March 26, at Oxford City and County.

In their quarter-final clash, Westlecot won both their home rinks against West Berks, with Mel Biggs defeating Parsonson 15-11, while Ian Jefferies’ 25-5 success over Barry Williams really did the damage.

However, away from their Old Town base, Dave Godwin’s rink were beaten 21-13, while Mikey Titcombe lost 16-9 to Tony Aubrey.

At the Open Single Circuit, played at Bristol, Denis Holborow reached the last 16.

The Westlecot player defeated Andrew Owens (St Andrews) and Clarrie Dunbar’s Keith Bailey on tie-breakers before losing to Norman Coad (Bodmin) 2-0.
