WESTLECOT’S junior team are through to the quarter-finals of the mixed David Cornwell U25 two rink triples competition.

They face top Devon junior side Torquay United at the neutral venue of Bristol City and County IBC on Sunday.

This is a new event and replaces the old mixed U25 double rinks, in which Westlecot reached the semi-finals three years ago before losing on the last end to Kent side Swale (Sittingbourne).

In this season’s revamped competition Westlecot opened their campaign by beating Whiteknights (Reading) without bowling a wood as the Berkshire side conceded the tie.

They then blitzed Oxford City & County 45-14, before beating Bristol 38-23 in round three.

Westlecot have named an unchanged team to play Torquay.

  • WESTLECOT players have secured more places at the two blocks of national championship events to be held in Melton & District at the end of March and Nottingham in April in the age group events.

Mike Titcombe has qualified for the last 16 in the men’s national singles at Melton.

The 22-year-old, from Old Town, beat England international Robert Newman (Whiteknights, Reading) 21-13 in the Area 14 final played at Oxford City & County on Tuesday.

The same evening, the trio of Mel Biggs, Ian Jefferies and Neil Smith booked their places at Melton with a win over Barry Williams’ trio from West Berks (Newbury).

Smith and co won the Area 14 triples final played at Loddon Vale (Basingstoke) 20-10 to seal their Melton spot.

Smith and Chris Cheesley should have been playing their Area 14 pairs final on Friday evening at Basingstoke’s Loddon Vale.

However, the ladies Area 14 triples final between Westlecot’s Jayne Croston, Lucy and Katy Smith and Whiteknights’ Caroline Mabley’s trio from Reading at Loddon Vale was postponed.

Katy Smith beat the weather but not opponent Donna Knight (West Berks) in the Area 14 final of the two bowl singles, going 21-16 at Loddon Vale.

Other Area 14 news sees the quartet of Denis Holborow, Dave Snell, Terry Walton and Mel Biggs scheduled to play Barry Williams’ West Berks, Newbury team at Oxford C&C on March 12.

While the family pairs Area 14 final between Barry and Tom Pittuck (Westlecot) and Joe and Paul Justin (Carterton) has to be arranged.

  • WESTLECOT, who finished runners-up in the east region of the Wessex League to Loddon Vale, are through to the quarter-finals of the end-of-season play-offs after their opponents in the last 16, Torquay United, conceded the tie.

Westlecot therefore move forward to the quarter-finals and will face the winners of the clash between holders Clarrie Dunbar and wild card Bromsgrove (Worcs).
