BOWLS: Anderson holds head high after nationals

1:07pm Friday 7th March 2008

By Dave Eaton »

KYLE ANDERSON found the going extremely tough at Loddon Vale in his first national final.

The 15-year-old from Wanborough, who was representing Westlecot, had performed extremely well to even qualify for the last 32 in the national Under 25 Singles championship by winning the Area 16 final.

But the Ridgeway student fell at the first hurdle beaten two sets to love by Ben Paulley (Dolphin, Poole).

Anderson made a confident start and led 4-0 after three ends but Paulley fought back to edge 6-5 ahead on the seventh end.

He then dropped two threes to lose the first set 11-5.

Anderson struggled in the second set and was11-1 down after five ends. He won the next two to cut the gap to 11-5 but then dropped a three to lose the set 14-5.

The Westlecot youngster should not be too downhearted as it was good experience for him and was beaten by a 20-year-old appearing in his third final.

Paulley then went on to beat two current junior internationals and only lost in the semi-final 1.5-0.5 to the eventual winner Danny May (Cumbria).
