SHAWN Grant caused the upset of the night as he knocked out former professional boxer Phill Day in an amazing night of white-collar boxing at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

The undefeated multi-champion needed just two minutes 29 seconds of the opening round to dispose of Day, who fought former cruiserweight and heavyweight world champion David Haye in the paid ranks, to claim the Neilson Promotions (NP) cruiserweight title.

In the clash for the NP super-middleweight crown, Paul Payne was stopped Newton Abbot’s Jase James in the final round.

The Devonian, who stepped in for the fight a short notice, came on strong from the third round and in the final session a flurry of spiteful punches from James forced the referee to wave the contest off.

Phil Williams successfully defended his heavyweight title with a narrow 29-28 points decision over Niall Howard.

In an even contest, Howard was the more aggressive of the two and was clearly aggrieved by the decision.

Local boy Luke Hambridge felt the power of former amateur boxer Roydell Thomas is their bout with the unknown latter taking just 62 seconds to send Hambridge crashing to the canvas to seal the victory.

Team KO team fighter Shabbz Margai claimed a 30-28 points win over Gav Tower-Wilson, while the grudge match between Troy Paul and Kane Sherwood ended up in a 29-29 draw.

The popular Rich Loveday won his heavyweight clash with ex-amateur James Anderson, stopping his blown-out opponent after two minutes of the second round.

Team KO’s Jonnie Stokes saw his four-fight winning streak ended by Luke Boswell of Scrapper’s Gym, who claimed a 29-28 verdict.

Luke Robinson was another points victor in his clash with Carl Woodhams. In a hard-fought battle Robinson took the 30-27 decision.

Gary Venton won every round his battle over debutant Kieron Jennings, while Antony Cadder stopped Gareth ‘The Honey Monster’ Dimino after one minute 28 seconds of round two in their bout after the latter’s corner threw in the towel.

In the battle of two debutants, Team KO’s Dave Sanders lost every round to the hard-working Jamie Ashby, while Faz Farrell stopped youngster Alex Jordan midway through the final round.

Ant Green won the opening contest of the night as he claimed a 30-28 decision over George Easdon.

The night raised more than £3,000 for the Neilson’s nominated local charity, helping little Jayden-Vito Mazzotta-Drapper pay for a life changing operation.
