WITH fight night now just a few days away, promoter Keith Mayo believes that the show on Saturday is the most prestigious one he has ever put together.

Penhill’s Kelvin Young makes the first defence of his IBO super-middleweight inter-continental title, while Swindon’s Southern Area cruiserweight champion Lawrence Bennett faces Chris Keane in an eliminator for the British crown.

But as well as the two main events, the Greenbridge-based promoter also has an exciting undercard with Swindon-based super-middleweight Tariq Quaddus stepping up to a six round contest for the first time, while Tamuka Mucha, who has spent time training in Freddie Roach’s world renowned Wild Card gym, and welterweight knock-out artist Joe Pigford, who has stopped four of his five opponents to date, are also in action at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

“I have put on bigger shows where there have been 10 or 12 bouts,” Mayo said.

“But with the IBO defence and the (British title) eliminator this is pretty big, for the prestige this is the biggest.”

But this show has not been without its problems.

On Monday lunchtime, as Young was fine tuning his preparations to face Cesar Hernan Reynoso, Mayo got a call to inform him that the Argentine would not be available to fight as he didn’t have the relevant medical forms.

Mayo has gone through almost 30 opponents to face his IBO champion and at the time the Advertiser went to press last night, Young was still awaiting to discover who would be in the opposite corner on Saturday.

“It is frustrating,” Mayo explained. “I’d say to Kelvin and the trainer (Richard Farnan) the lad has fell through let’s have a look at this lad.

“They look at him, they study him and see him on YouTube and start working towards it and then he’s off, and you have to start looking again – we’ve only got few days to go, but that’s boxing.”

Mayo is hopeful that more than 1,000 people will pack into the sports hall at the Oasis on Saturday, but like every other promoter he would like even more.

And fight fans get an early taste of what is to come on Friday night (7pm) when Young, his opponent, Bennett and Keane all weigh-in at the Asiana restaurant in Old Town.

Tickets for the show are priced £1,000 for a ringside table for 10 people with a three-course meal, £850 for table of 10 in row two, again with the meal included, £60 for ringside seats and £35 unreserved. For more information visit www.kmpromotions.co.uk
