LIAM Cameron’s hopes of persuading Kelvin Young to defend his IBO inter-continental title against him are dead in the water after the governing body said that they would not make the contest an eliminator for the world title.

The Twitter account belonging to Cameron’s trainer Chris Smedley claimed that the governing body would sanction a fight between the IBO youth super-middleweight champion and the IBO inter-continental title holder.

It also claimed that the bout could be made an eliminator with Young Gun looking towards making himself mandatory for the world title.

However, the IBO president Ed Levine refuted those eliminator claims when contacted by the Advertiser.

He said: “The IBO Youth Champion, or for that matter any IBO Jr. title holder, is eligible to fight any IBO I/C (inter-continental) champion. That is correct.

“However, that fight would not and could not be an eliminator for the world title.

“If the IBO I/C champion defends his title three times within eighteen months including one win against an approved top 35 rated contender, he will become the mandatory to the world champion.

“The IBO I/C champion is also eligible to fight for the world title in a voluntary defense by the world champion.”

The Cannonball has been trying to goad the Penhill pugilist into making the second defence of his crown against him in the autumn.

But the out-spoken 23-year-old’s attempts have been rebuffed by Young and his trainer Richard Farnan.

Young, who climbed off the canvas to defend his title against Francis Tchoffo earlier this month, told the Sheffield slugger that he had no intention of facing him.

He said: “Is beating Liam going to get me a crack at the world title? No, get in line boy.”

Meanwhile Farnan has insisted that they are continuing with their plan to get Young into a mandatory position for the title that is being fought for in Chicago in August between Donovan George and Dyah Davis.

And Young’s manager and promoter Keith Mayo said: “If they want to have any chance of the fight being made they need to speak to me first. They have made no approach and made no offer.”

Young is expected to make the second defence of the title in late September or early October.
