LUKE Watkins will make his professional debut on the undercard of George Groves’ comeback fight.

The 24-year-old announced his intentions to join the paid ranks in June and now the Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained cruiserweight will make his bow on September 20 at Wembley Arena.

Watkins, who will be managed by super-middleweight star Groves, will also be advised by Fitzpatrick.

And while Groves is plotting his return to the world stage when he faces Christopher Rebrasse for the European and WBC silver titles, Watkins is ready to take his first steps.

“I can’t wait to make my debut,” Watkins told the Advertiser. “To be on a stage like that is fantastic and I count my blessings.

“The ultimate goal for me is to become a world champion, that is the dream for any boxer who turns professional - I’m no different.

“I know that is a long way down the line. But I feel that my journey is going to take me towards area titles, British and ultimately the world.”

While stating his desire to emulate the likes of Evander Holyfield and David Haye, winning world titles at both cruiserweight and heavyweight, Watkins knows that he can’t run before he walks.

“Anyone who laces up a glove wants to hear the word ‘heavyweight champion of the world’ - it’s the dream.

“At the moment I’m pretty much walking around at cruiserweight, I have about eight pounds to lose to be at championship weight - anyone on a diet can lose that, so weight is not an issue.

“But I know I have to be realistic and take my time, this is a journey, boxing is my career, it is my job.

“There is no timeline on me achieving my goals, sometimes they come quicker and sometimes it can be longer - that is just life.

“I have no other job, I’m a professional boxer and I can’t wait for my debut.”

Watkins has also restated his desire to face Swindon’s Southern Area cruiserweight champion Lawrence Bennett.

“What Lawrence has done is great for Swindon, I’m so happy for him,” Watkins said.

“He’s had next to no amateur experience and he is the Southern Area champ, he’s won a British title eliminator - that’s fantastic I’m really happy for the dude - it puts Swindon on the map.

“But it is a fight I’d take, although I do know for Lawrence it doesn’t make sense right now.”

Tickets for Watkins debut bout, which sees Groves headlining the show at Wembley Arena, are priced £40, £60, £100, £150 and £250 and are available from the 24-year-old.

Watkins is also looking for sponsorship to help with his career.
