GARVEY Kelly could make his professional debut in Swindon according to his trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick.

The 26-year-old welterweight, managed by super-middleweight star George Groves, has signalled his intentions to leave the amateurs behind to join the paid ranks.

With Greenbridge-based promoter Keith Mayo likely to stage his third show of the year in the town in November, Fitzpatrick said that talks have taken place about including both Kelly and Luke Watkins, who makes his debut at Wembley Arena later this month on Groves’ undercard, on the autumn bill.

“We have spoken to Keith,” Fitzpatrick told the Advertiser.

“Nothing is signed at the moment, but there is the possibility of Garvey and Duke fighting in Swindon.

“I have told them both (Kelly and Watkins) that Swindon should be their world right now.

“They need the support of their hometown.

“There will be fantastic opportunities which could see them fight elsewhere, but Swindon has to be their world.”

Groves added: “It is important for both fighters to build a fan base in Swindon, so we will get them fights close to Swindon as possible.

“Also (I want) put them on some big bills in London and when appropriate take them up and down the country.”

Should Kelly not fight on the Swindon show, then Fitzpatrick said that his charge could head over to Denmark for his debut.

Kelly is hoping that he will get two outings before the turn of the year.

He said: “I’m thinking that we will be out a couple of times before Christmas.

“I’m ready to go now, I have been training hard for nigh on six months, we have had little breaks for holidays and that, but I’m ready to fight, I ready to go now.”
