JAMIE Cox is back and will make his return at the Swindon Oasis the Advertiser can reveal.

The former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion will make his long awaited return to the ring on December 6 in his hometown.

The unbeaten 28-year-old, who has not boxed since June 2013, has begun training for his latest comeback.

Cox, who won a Commonwealth gold medal in 2006, is likely to fight over 10 rounds according to his trainer John Costello.

“The Oasis is booked for December 6,” Costello told the Advertiser. “Jamie Cox is back.

“We are looking at getting Jamie a world ranking - we are not interested in going down the domestic route.

“We are looking at a 10-rounder, for some sort of title with one of the big four (WBA/WBC/WBO/IBF) governing bodies.

“We have got interest from the US and we want to get Jamie fighting for some sort of title in December.”

But Costello admits that they may have to wait to secure any kind of title shot for Cox as he has not fought in more than 12 months.

That inactivity has meant that the southpaw, who is set to remain in the 154lb division, has lost all his rankings.

“Jamie is 17 and 0,” Costello said. “He did fight last year, but whether we could get him some sort of title with some substance remains to be seen.

“But what we want is for the people of Swindon to see Jamie fighting again, fighting for something that they can get their teeth into.”

Despite having offers to box in the States and a potential three-fight deal from his former promoter Frank Warren, Cox’s return is being staged by his manager Lee Beard, the former assistant trainer of Ricky Hatton, and Costello.

“We are looking forward to putting on the show in Swindon,” Costello said. “We are still in the early stages of planning it, but we have already booked the Oasis.

“I have got a young lad in Ryan Kelly, he has won five national titles as an amateur, who will be making his debut and I’ve got a big punching welterweight I’m hoping to have make his debut.”

Cox’s last fight back in June 2013 was also at the Swindon Oasis and he went six rounds with Frenchman Matiouze Royer.

Prior to that outing, Cox, who has struggled with hand injuries since turning professional in 2007, secured a narrow unanimous points verdict over Ghanian Obodai Dai to claim the Commonwealth light-middleweight title in September 2011.
