DONOVAN George’s manager Michael Kinsch says that they are still committed to giving Kelvin Young a shot at the world title.

‘Da Bomb’ George claimed the IBO super-middleweight crown last month in his hometown of Chicago with a points victory over Dyah Davis.

Penhill pugilist Young was at ringside with his trainer Richard Farnan to see the action unfold and start talks over a potential fight.

With talks ongoing with Young’s manager and promoter Keith Mayo for the fight, Kinsch said in an exclusive interview with the Swindon Advertiser that bringing the 29-year-old, who has won 26 of his 32 bouts, over to the UK in the new year remains the preferred choice.

“There are options for us to go over to overseas or Canada,” Kinsch said.

“And then there is, of course, the option for us to come over to the UK.

“The preferred choice is to come over to you guys and give Kelvin his opportunity and we are in talks with Keith about making that happen.

“When we met with Kelvin and Richard we said right from the very beginning he would be the first for Donovan to defend his title against - and that remains the case.”

But Kinsch says that any fight would have to wait until the new year at least as George, who was just two minutes shy of going 12 rounds with current WBC light-heavyweight champion and power puncher Adonis Stevenson two years ago, broke his hand in the Davis bout, while Young is set to compete in an eight round contest on November 1.

“Kelvin is fighting in November anyway so the fight wouldn’t be able to take place until the new year,” Kinsch said.

“And Donovan needs time for his hand to heal properly.

“There is no point going into a world title fight if you are not 100 per cent.”

Kinsch is also keen to get a date finalised for George’s next bout so that they can start planning their training schedule.

“We would like it sorted sooner rather than later,” he said.

“Keith is talking with people about venues and TV and hopefully it can be done.

“Donovan has fought on a big show in Canada when he faced Adonis Stevenson, he has fought in New York so we are excited about the possibility of coming over to the UK.”
