TARIQ Quaddus says that sparring the likes of Chris Eubank Jr and Callum Smith has helped him believe he can take his career to the next level.

The 24-year-old will make his first outing of the season on November 1 at the Swindon Oasis Leisure Centre on the ‘By Any Means Necessary’ bill.

And with the southpaw preparing to face the durable Harry Matthews, Quaddus believes sharing the ring with two of the country’s rising stars has helped him to improve.

He said: “I have learnt more in myself. I have learnt that I can handle myself with the class above.

“They didn’t have it their own way at all. If anything, it was 50-50 spar with both. That is why I was happy.

“I didn’t walk away bruised up, I didn’t have a bloody nose, I didn’t get beat up. I went there, had a 50-50 spar, and learnt a lot.

“That is why Ronnie Davies (Eubank’s trainer) has called us back. If it was a walkover then it wouldn’t help for his fight against Billy-Joe (Saunders).

“It is the same with Callum Smith when he fought a southpaw from America.

“We went on the Friday and they asked straightaway if we could come back on the Monday because I had done a good spar.”

Quaddus, who has now been living in Swindon for two years, is looking forward to stepping into the ring with the Yorkshire Pocket Rocket, however the Richard Farnan-trained boxer admits that his future belongs at super-middleweight.

And while he knows that the 12 stone division is a more congested route to glory, Quaddus feels that it is a weight that he is best suited to when it comes to championship fights.

“I walk around at light-heavy (175lbs). To be at light-heavy a day before weigh-in, I’m going to be giving it all away,” said Quaddus, who will go into his seventh fight next month.

“With these fights at the moment I’m happy to fight at 12-6 or 12-7, only because that is what weight my opponents come in at.

“On the day of the weigh-in, I’m eating a breakfast, lunch and snack before the weigh-in, I really don’t struggle with the weight.

“I know I can easily do super-middle and I’ll be comfortable at that because the next day I’ll be 12-4 or 12-5, nice and fuelled-up.

“If the right opportunity came at light-heavy, then we can work towards it.

“But for my own body, I think I would suit super-middle - it would be just right.

“At light-heavy, I’d be carrying a little bit more just for the sake of not giving too much away. It is like a cruiserweight fighting at heavyweight.”
