LUKE Watkins was still waiting for his adrenaline levels to die down long into Sunday after he had claimed a spectacular stoppage win in front his home crowd the night before.

The 24-year-old cruiserweight was boxing in Swindon for the first time in his professional career and made it three wins from three as he laid out Hungarian Istvan Kun with a ferocious right hand halfway through the fifth round.

‘The Duke’ was thrilled to claim an impressive victory at the Oasis leisure centre and doesn’t think his hometown debut could have gone any better.

“I couldn’t ask for anything more than a performance like that in front of Swindon,” said Watkins, whose manager, super-middleweight star George Groves, was ringside on Saturday night.

“It was my first time fighting in Swindon and there were people that had travelled to be there too. To be honest, it takes a day or two for the buzz to wear off.

“You have to treat every man like he’s a killer if you want to bring out your best. I had a good flurry in the third and if the round had been 30 seconds longer, I think I could have stopped him then.

“He recuperated and got through the fourth but I got it done in the end.”

Another interested spectator for Watkins’ win over Kun was fellow Swindon cruiserweight Lawrence Bennett and the Fitzpatrick’s Gym fighter reiterated that he believes a meeting between himself and the 32-year-old, who won a British title eliminator in his last outing, is inevitable.

Watkins said: “We’re at the same weight. We’re from the same town. He’s got a (Southern Area) belt. We’re on the same path so why not make it happen?

“I want to have one or two more fights this side of Christmas but I think it could happen in spring.”
