HORSESHOE Gym trainer Richard Farnan expects Tariq Quaddus’ next fight to be against the man that once stopped his stable-mate Kelvin Young.

Light-heavyweight Quaddus, who racked up his fifth straight win of the year as he beat Harry Matthews on Saturday night, looks on track to take on Hampshire’s Sam Couzens, who claimed a controversial win over Kelvin Young in May last year before being outpointed to the Southern Area super-middleweight title by the Penhill fighter four months later.

Quaddus’ fight with Matthews at the Oasis last weekend was brought to a premature end as the York man suffered a nasty gash above his left eye in an accidental clash of heads in the fourth round.

Farnan revealed that Couzens was on the other end of the phone the morning afterwards to check that the 24-year-old wasn’t injured himself.

“We’re trying to plot Taz’s next move and Sam Couzens will be it.

“Sam called me on Sunday morning just to check that Taz would be okay to fight him,” said Farnan.

“We wanted to try and get the fight to happen up in Peterborough but it doesn’t look like that will be coming off, so we’re currently looking for a show to get them on.

“Tariq showed on Saturday what a fantastic boxer he is.

“He was up against a guy that’s been in with the best but he shook him a few times and looked very good.

“I don’t count the first two fights on his record because it was back in 2008 and he was 18-years-old.

“He’s been sparring with people like Chris Eubank Jr, George Groves and Callum Smith and has been called back, which shows just what they thought of him.”
