Patrick McDonagh was the big winner when Walcot ABC held their presentation evening to honour last season’s club stars at the County Ground Hotel.

The 17-year-old was awarded ‘Best Club Boxer’ after a season where he won the under 19 national title at 64kgs, and then beat the Scottish champion in the Three Nations championships to win the British Youth title.

Patrick McDonagh was then selected to represent GB at the World Championships, where he exceeded expectations by reaching the last eight, losing a close bout to the eventual champion on points. Patrick’s younger brother Jimmy won the ‘Best Junior’ award after a successful season which saw the 16-year-old represent England Juniors against Ireland in County Mayo and score a notable victory.

Completing a memorable night for the McDonagh family was 13-year-old Michael, who won the Youth Championship Shield for reaching the national semi finals of the schoolboys’ championship.

The coveted ‘Best Senior’ title was handed to Felix De Giles.

Despite having to juggle a career as a professional jockey with boxing training, De Giles has won four from five bouts for Walcot.

Chairman Dave Veysey summed up the Walcot season, saying: “Last season was my 20th as club chairman and was a tough one for the club, with our chief coach Harry Scott having undergone throat surgery for cancer.

“But Harry being Harry he was bravely back in the gym a few weeks later as if nothing had happened, he’s an absolute rock and an inspiration to us all.

“Patrick McDonagh was the stand out boxer for Walcot last season, and we hope he can reproduce that form this season.

“I have to thank the Walcot coaches Harry Scott, Danny Hughes, Harold Scott, Sarah Wicks, Lionel McCrea and Jason O’Donoghue, who give their time for free in the interests of the boxers.

“Walcot has been a successful club for many years now - during the past 10 years we have won 24 national and international titles – so let’s hope the success continues.”
