WALCOT boxer Freddie De Giles enjoyed a debut to remember when he won a hard-fought battle at the Chepstow ABC event last Friday, writes Dave Veysey.

Chepstow Rugby Club hosted the evening’s action, with 28-year-old De Giles encountering Scott Gibbs from the host club in a middleweight clash over three two-minute rounds.

The stocky Welsh boxer attacked from the opening bell with left hooks and straight rights to outscore De Giles during the opening round.

The Swindonian raised his game during the middle session, landing with fast left jabs and straight rights to level the match going into the last round.

The final two minutes saw Gibbs begin to tire under pressure from De Giles, and a minute from the end the Walcot boxer scored with a heavy three punch combination to see the Welshman take a standing count. Gibbs survived to hear the final bell, where De Giles was awarded a unanimous points victory.

After the fight De Giles was elated, he said: “I am delighted to have won on my ring debut. It was hard work at times, but my fitness saw me through.

“I must thank Harry Scott and the Walcot coaches who have worked with me since I joined the club.”

There was disappointment for Walcot clubmates Jack Hayes and Rishelle Dillon. In his ring debut Hayes lost on points to James Hobbs from the host club.

Walcot’s female boxer Rishelle Dillon lost out to the more experienced Rosie Eccles, also from the host club.

Eleven-year-old Lewis Edwards boxed well during an exhibition bout with Port Talbot’s Connor Howard.
