WALCOT ABC’s Fred Bond made a dream start to his boxing career with victory at the Malmesbury ABC Dinner Show in Chippenham last Saturday, writes Dave Veysey.

The 11-year-old won a close battle with fellow newcomer Aiden Hirst, from the host club, over three one-and-a-half minute rounds, which formed part of an entertaining 10-bout bill.

Both youngsters started nervously, with few scoring shots landing during the opening round.

The Walcot boxer grew in confidence during the middle session, scoring with left jabs and double jabs whilst moving around the ring on nimble feet, in the process evading most of Hirst’s counters.

The final round was a close affair as both eager youngsters went for the win, but after a spirited contest it was Bond who was awarded a split points’ decision.

He said: “It was great to win my first bout in front of my biggest supporter – my dad Steve.

“He takes me to the Walcot gym three or four times a week, so without him I couldn’t train.’’ Walcot coach Danny Hughes was delighted with his protégé, adding: “Fred did really well. He listened to my instructions in the corner and held his nerve throughout the contest.’’
