SAM Couzens has promised to stop Tariq Quaddus when they collide for the British Masters bronze light-heavyweight title on Sunday.

The former conqueror of Kelvin Young is aiming to propel himself back into Southern Area title contention this weekend at the Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitlock Leicestershire.

And after seeing southpaw Quaddus spar with Chris Eubank JR on the internet, the 28-year-old is confident of how he can stop the Swindon-based fighter.

“Fair play to Tariq for the sparring with Chris Eubank,” Couzens said. “But I saw that Chris Eubank was landing too many of my favourite shot the upper cut and that is what I’ll be looking to do on Sunday.

“And when I do land it will all be over.

“I’ve know Tariq for years, we turned pro around the same time (in 2008) and I know what a decent boxer he is.

“But he has never been in with anyone like me, I’ve been in with some of the best like Frank Buglioni and I’m confident that I’ll win on Sunday.”

Couzens and Quaddus were set to met at the Oasis Leisure Centre at the start of November, but a shoulder injury sustained in the Titchfield fighter’s last outing, against Chris Hobbs, meant that he was unable to compete.

However, the former British Masters light-heavyweight champion says that the injury is now healed.

“I have been doing plenty of yoga and when spar I have had brace on as not to put it out again.

“I have done some pad work without the brace, but the aim has been to make sure that I don’t do it any damage during training.”

Since his last fight with Young back September last year, which the Penhill pugilist avenged his defeat to claim the Southern Area title, Couzens has been used by Quaddus’ trainer Richard Farnan to spar Young.

And while fighter, who has won 11 of his 26 contests to date, knows that the trainer will have plenty of insight into how to stop the Titchfield man.

“I know that Tariq is a decent fighter and that he is quite intelligent,” Couzens said.

“I know that Rich Farnan knows me inside out, but I have been in at a higher level.

“I haven’t sparred with Tariq when I have been up in Swindon, but he has seen me spar Lawrence Bennett and he is a southpaw and I always feel comfortable against them.”
