TARIQ Quaddus’ trainer Richard Farnan says he will be amazed if Sam Couzens hears the final bell on Sunday.

Quaddus and Couzens will collide at the Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitlock, Leicestershire for the British Masters Bronze light-heavyweight title.

The trainer of the Swindon-based boxer is confident that he can notch up another success against Couzens after guiding Kelvin Young to the Southern Area super-middleweight title in September last year.

And Farnan says that his southpaw is more than ready to claim his first title.

“Tariq finished his training on Wednesday night and he is punching so hard,” Farnan said.

“Every shot he fired in on the pads hurt me, they hurt my wrists, my forearms and my shoulders and he wasn’t even punching at 100 per cent of his full power.

“Sam says that he is going to knock Tariq out, to be honest I’d be amazed if Sam heard the final bell because of the power that Tariq is showing – this is going to be a great fight.”

Farnan believes that the quality of sparring that Quaddus has been getting for this fight is what will secure that belt.

The 24-year-old has been sparring Chris Eubank JR, Commonwealth light-middleweight champion Liam Williams and Trowbridge’s Nick Blackwell, who is mandatory for the British middleweight crown, ahead of Sunday’s bout.

“Sam says that he is going to use his upper cut, but we already know that is his money shot,” Farnan said.

“He said that Chris Eubank was landing them, well Sam is not Chris Eubank, he is not as fast, fit or accurate as Chris Eubank.

“Sam is not Nick Blackwell or Liam Williams, I know Sam has been getting some good sparring against Tony Hill, but he has not been mixing in the company that Tariq has.”

The trainer believes Quaddus, who will be in his sixth fight this year after returning to the sport following a five-and-a-half year hiatus, will have no problems dealing with the naturally bigger Couzens.

“Tariq was weighing 172 pounds on Wednesday, Sam’s manager Carl Greaves spoke to me the other day reminding me that there is a couple of pounds leeway for this belt and that Sam could weigh 177lbs,” Farnan said.

“I said that didn’t bother us, he can weigh what he wants. Tariq will come in full of energy on Sunday.

“He won’t have done anything between Wednesday and Sunday so his body is going to be raring to go.”
