JAMIE Cox will look to secure a world ranking when he makes his comeback in the new year.

The former Commonwealth Games gold medallist is on course for his first bout in more than a year when he fights at the Swindon Oasis Leisure Centre on January 31.

The 28-year-old’s trainer John Costello believes that the Swindon public will be in for a shock when Cox, who last fought Matiouze Royer in June 2013 over six rounds, steps between the ropes.

“Jamie is on fire at the moment,” Costello said. “We are probably going to move him up to 160 (pounds) because he is looking so big and powerful.

“He could do light-middle (weight) but I think he would have to drain too much now and it would suit him moving up to middleweight.

“We have spoken to the big four governing bodies and they are happy for Jamie to box for one of their international or inter-continental titles.

“Unfortunately those are taken with the IBF, but there are still plenty of belts that we could go down the WBO route, the WBA or the WBC.

“They are all happy for Jamie to fight for one of their belts – they just want to see him active.”

Costello, who says that they are hoping to announce ticket details for the Oasis show before Christmas, has mooted an interest in southpaw Cox facing Jorge Sebastian Heiland, but admits it may be difficult to get the Argentine to Swindon.

The WBC International champion, who knocked out former world title challenger Matthew Macklin in Dublin last month, is also interesting fellow Brit John Ryder for a fight on the same night as the Anthony Joshua-Kevin Johnson undercard.

“In my opinion, Jamie destroys anyone in this country at 154 (light-middleweight) and 160 (middleweight),” Costello said.

“It would be nice if we could get the guy who beat Matt Macklin, but we know that could be difficult.

“What we want is a fight that Jamie and Swindon fans can really get their teeth into.”

Former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion Cox was originally set to make his comeback last weekend only for it to be postponed due to a shoulder injury.

And while Costello says that the fighter, who has had his unblemished professional career blighted by injury, is not fully recovered yet, they are stepping up the training.

“There is a still an issue with the shoulder,” the trainer said. “But we are about to begin sparring now.”

The Birmingham-based trainer is also hoping that they will be able to announce details of the undercard before the end of the year.

“We’ve got a couple of good lads up here and there could also be a few local lads on the show too,” Costello added. “We just need to speak to relevant people.”
