KELVIN Young is hoping that he can prove that he has what it takes to be fighting for titles again once Friday, February 13 is out of the way.

The Penhill pugilist is facing a make or break fight on the ‘World Awaits’ show at the Oasis Leisure Centre next month as he looks to bounce back from his shock eighth round stoppage at the hands of Kiril Psonko in a non-title light-heavyweight contest, which cost the 27-year-old his IBO super-middleweight inter-continental belt.

Young, who split with trainer Rich Farnan following that November loss, makes his attempted comeback against James Child, who has had only one win in 16 contests.

“That November fight was a massive blow for me. I go in expecting to win every fight, so to lose was a massive blow,” said Young, who is doing the majority of his training in Bristol at the Spaniorum Farm Gym. “To top it all off, I was stripped of my title - that was like being kicked while you are down.

“These things happen for a reason. You have got to be a strong-minded person to get over them and I’m sure that I can get over it and get back to winning ways. There will be more titles to come after this fight.”

While admitting it was a tough decision to part company with Farnan, Young believes that the change of scenery has already given him a new lease of life.

“There was nothing that Rich had done wrong that made me leave. I just felt that I needed a change. I can tell already that the decision was the right thing to do,” said the Swindon fighter.

“I’m learning new things and I have only been down there a week-and-a-half.

“Before I went to Bristol, I said to Keith (Mayo, manager and promoter) to put my name out there. I want to get out and be busy.

“But having been training down in Bristol, we think that I can be fighting for titles and that I can be competing.

“The best way to do that at the moment is to get a few wins on home soil and then see what offers come in and take it from there.

“I’m not looking past February 13. That is the only thing on my mind at the moment.”
