RYAN Martin learnt from the experience of his classy victory over the durable Kevin McCauley.

The 20-year-old was near punch perfect in claiming a shut-out victory over the 103-fight veteran, McCauley, on Friday night.

Following the third win of his professional career, the unbeaten Martin will now move to fight in Gloucester on April 18 with the possibility of moving up to six rounds.

Despite claiming a knock out success in his November outing, Martin says that he learnt a lot from going the distance with McCauley.

“It wasn’t the most exciting fight for me to have – people want to see me rushing in and knocking someone out – but it was never going to be a fight like that,” he said.

“He was tough, I knew he was going to make it awkward for me but I did what I had to do.

“I waited for him to throw the shots, waited for him to open up and catch him with counter punches.

“Coming from te amateurs to professionals, a lot of the boys come rushing in trying to point score.

“But it is not about that, you to have beat them round for round and I think that I did that – I nicked the rounds.”

When Martin stopped Jamie Ingleby last autumn, the welterweight had to drop several pounds of muscle mass the night before the fight leaving him feeling drained.

However, the talented youngster, who has struggled with hand problems in his career to date, said there were no problems with either this time around and he was able to manage his body well.

“I felt fantastic, the hands was perfect, no problem.

“(In fights like that) you have to save energy – I felt that I did that really well. At the end of every round I was sat in the corner and felt brilliant.

“You can’t go rushing in (against McCauley) he is resilient, he goes to the end, his defence is so tight you are not going to stop him.”
