WALCOT boxer Jimmy McDonagh heads into unknown territory on Friday when he competes in the national quarter-finals of the England Boxing Youth Championships at County Durham, writes Dave Veysey.

The 16-year-old faces the prospect of boxing three times in as many days in his quest to lift the English 60kgs crown.

Walcot chief coach Harry Scott said: “Because when a boxer competes for GB he has to box on consecutive days in World and European tournaments, England Boxing have decided to bring the same rules into our domestic events for the first time.

“It won’t be easy for Jimmy, but he has trained hard and deserves his chance.”

After the weigh in this morning the boxing starts at 2pm, with the winners competing in the semi-finals the next day.

Those boxers lucky enough to make the final will box on Sunday afternoon to decide who the new champions will be.
