JAMIE Cox's trainer John Costello says that his southpaw would love to face Eamonn O'Kane.

The 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist stepped up to middleweight in February and is set to return from San Diego tomorrow having been sparring Saul Alvarez for his fight with James Kirkland next weekend.

And with the Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained 2010 Commonwealth Games winner fighting Lewis Taylor this Saturday at the Lavey Sports Arena in Northern Ireland, there is a potential for a summer showdown.

But first Cox, who was once under the guidance of the Ferndale Road trainer, is pencilled in for a 10-round fight at The Venue in Edgbaston on Friday May 22.

"Jamie would love to fight Eamonn," Costello told the Adver. "He would take that fight in a heart beat.

"We could do it in Swindon, it would sell-out, maybe for his inter-continental title.

"But Jamie needs a 10-rounder first, none of the four major bodies won't put him in for anything until he has had done one - he has not been in a 10-rounder for nearly four years."

Costello also said that Cox has been looking good when in the ring with one of the top pound-for-pound fighters.

"He's looked comfortable in sparring," Costello added. "I'm told that Jamie gave Alvarez more trouble than (Gennady) Golovkin.

"He has also been sparring with (Esquiva Florentino) Falcao - the lad who beat (Anthony) Ogogo at the (London) Olympics."

When Cox returns to the tomorrow, preparations will go into full swing for his next fight - which is likely to include sparring with Trowbridge's British middleweight title challenger Nick Blackwell.

And while the he has to successfully come through a 10-rounder next, the future beyond is looking bright for the undefeated former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion.

"The one we really want is Chris Eubank (JR, the WBA middleweight interim world champion)," Costello said. "But we really need this 10 rounder first.

"Once we have done that then we can really push on. There are some really good names, out there and we would take any of them - but no-one wants to fight Jamie Cox."
