WALCOT boxer Drew Hunt became Western Counties Schoolboy champion with a decisive points win at the regional final in Bude.

The 12-year-old took a unanimous points decision over Ben Jenkins from the Mayflower Club at 41.5kg.

Both lads attacked from the opening bell, but it was Hunt who landed the more effective shots in the first.

Over the remaining two rounds the Dorcan schoolboy increased his advantage through non-stop punching, and whilst Jenkins refused to yield, Hunt always enjoyed the upper-hand.

Hunt now joins clubmates Mikey McDonagh and Luke Scott Browne in the next round, which is being hosted by Horseshoe ABC at St Joseph’s Catholic College in Ocotal Way.

However, there was disappointment for Nigel Harris, 13, who lost a close bout with Fire Virk from Chard.

Meanwhile, three Cirencester ABC fighters will be joining the Walcot trio at the pre-quarter finals of the England Boxing Schools Championships, which sees the Western Counties face London on Sunday.

Johnny Varey defeated Downend ABCs Sonny Tucker in an all-action 37kg contest.

Varey was the stronger of the two lads, dictating the pace and boxed superbly behind a left jab catching his opponent with two and three punch combinations to clinch the Western Counties title.

Raymond Jones took a unanimous points decision against Taz Turner in the 42kg division, catching his opponent with solid left hand and right hand punches and bringing his combination punches together nicely.

Thomas Varey overcame the experienced Taylor Barber to join his teammates in Swindon.

The Ciren boxer, in the 51kg division, upped the tempo in the second round after an even first session and in the final stanza got behind the double jab to claim the decision.

WALCOT’S Bill Harris enjoyed the third win of his fledgling career against Bournemouth’s Baileigh Hibbs.

The 12-year-old Walcot fighter was edged out in the opening round by Hibbs but came back in the final two to take the decision.

Also representing Walcot on the bill was middleweight Rhyan Thomas, who lost an entertaining contest against Darryl Bath from the Inner City club in Southampton.

CIRENCESTER had four boxers travel to Cardiff for a show hosted by Victoria Park ABC.

Martin Jones made his debut for Ciren in the 44kg division and, boxing well behind a high guard, took a unanimous points decision against Aaron Marinos.

Also in the 44kg division, Lewis Varey faced Rocky Wilson from Rhyl and the Ciren fighter put pressure on the North Walian man from the start to dominate the contest and claim the win.

Freddie Nicholl claimed a first round stoppage success over Highfields ABC's Ashley James after a straight right hand saw the referee give a standing eight count to the Welsh boxer.

Seeking victory, Nicholl went after his opponent with a solid left hand then right hook, which shook James before the referee stopped the contest.

Dave Davis was then involved in an exhibition bout with Joe Evans.
