RYAN Martin is determined to put on a show when he headlines his first bill later this month.

The unbeaten welterweight faces the dangerous southpaw slugger Faheem Khan at the Grange Drive Community Centre on Saturday, June 27, as he makes the step up from four to eight rounds for the first time on the New Generation show.

Given the fact that Khan’s last outing, at the Oasis Leisure Centre in February, saw him stun Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained Garvey Kelly, Martin knows he in for a tough fight as he looks for his fifth win in as many contests.

“I didn’t see that fight (Khan against Kelly) because I was still in the changing room, but before it my trainer Islan (Eltuyev) said that he had seen him (Khan) in the other changing room and he was looking incredibly confident,” Martin said.

“I know that he is coming to win, I know that he is dangerous and I know that he can punch, but I’m going to be too quick for him - my speed will be the key.

“I’m going to beat him to the punch, break him down and, if I can, I will try and get him out of there before the end.”

While admitting that he did not see Khan’s success over Kelly, 21-year-old Martin says that he has been looking at some of the Exeter-based fighter’s other 13 bouts, which has seen the 32-year-old stopped in all four of his defeats.

“I have been watching some of his fights on You Tube and you can see he is a come forward fighter and a big hitter,” he said.

“He is also wild which in the pro game can be quite dangerous, but I’m confident that I can stay out of trouble.

“This is my first time headlining, I’m looking forward to it and I want to put on a show and get the win.”

Despite doubling the distance in the ring, Martin says that he does eight rounds of sparring in the gym ‘on a bad day’.

“Training has been going really well,” he said. “I have been getting in quite a few rounds in.

“We haven’t been down to Lee Selby this time around because it was quite close to his (successful IBF) world (featherweight) title fight and they were winding down.

“We have spent quite a bit of time up in Birmingham and I have been sparring with Danny (Bharj).

“I’m regularly doing 10 to 12 rounds, but I know that is just sparring and it is different once you step through those.”
