WALCOT ABC are celebrating after two of their young boxers won gold medals at the Bristol Box Cup, writes Dave Veysey.

Drew Hunt and Bill Harris, who are both 12-years-old, beat the best in their age and weight at the Bristol Academy of Sport to claim their respective gongs.

For Hunt, it was the second year running that he has won gold at the tournament and in his Class B U42kg semi-final, he comfortably beat Ben Jenkins from the Mayflower club in Plymouth by a unanimous points decision.

In the final, the Dorcan schoolboy met Reece Tobin from Ireland and used his fast left jab and strong straight right to good effect over the opening two rounds, putting Tobin under constant pressure.

The Irish teenager walked onto a heavy right hand in the opening moments of the final round, whereupon his corner threw in the towel.

Meanwhile, Harris enjoyed a bye to the final of the Class A U32kg section, where he encountered Ethan Thorner of Shepton Mallet.

The pint-sized terrier threw leather for the entire contest to win by a unanimous points decision but there was disappointment for his brother Nigel Harris and clubmate Fred Bond.

13-year-old Nigel lost his final on points to Max Boulton of Yate ABC whilst Walcot’s fourth entrant, Bond, went out at the semi-final stage with a points defeat to Weston-super-Mare’s Jiley Lamb.
